1-channel video installation / 10 min / Kristina Kvalvik / Simon Möller / 2006
The video presents a facade, typical of Swedish suburban architecture from the 1950s, called "welfare state." During the video the facade is slowly broken down. Residents of the building are unaware of this and go on with their daily activities. It is not the characters in the video that creates the story, but the building's change and decay. Power relationships between the characters in the video and the viewer shifts when the characters look back at the viewer. At this time moment the viewer changes from being an observer to be observed. The presentation is an attempt to create a sense of being outside, unable to change or affect the slowly changing facade.
